Swinging

Popularized in the mid 80s, swinging is the act of having a set of couples that interconnected in their commitments but for a short period of time releasing those commitments and performing sexual acts with and for each other in a closed environment.

Many couples reach a state in their relationship where the bi-relational nature of their relationship in which only two people are involved sexually speaking begins to get stale, and a longing for new ways and methods of sex practice is wished for and discussed.

Eventually, many couples come to grips that swinging is a feasible solution to their curiosity and enter into the next phase of swinging, that being searching for other committed couples that are undergoing the same levels of unhappiness in their relationship. This phase, often called the “find and lock” phase, is often times the most difficult, as the cultural differences and awkwardness of discussing the sensitive issue of sex in today’s culture presents itself in a strong fashion prior to breaking the ice of communication.

Many couples post text based ads on services like Tinder and Craigslist in order to put their desires out in hopes that other couples doing the same will find mutual desires and begin communicating with each other and setting up encounter times and places.

Many instances of swinging occur in secretive locations that are somewhat public, such as the back of restaurants or even libraries, however the vast majority of these happenings occur at one of the parties’ residences. At the core, polyamory is about multiple, consensual, sexual, loving relationships while swinging is multiple, consensual, sexual relationships.

The absence of the word ‘loving’ does lend a fairly different intent, philosophy and tone to the magazines and gatherings that cater to each group. But that doesn’t stop substantial numbers of self-identified polys from engaging in the same practices that self-identified swingers do – whether those acts be at swing clubs, Sacred Sex Parties, or among casual friends. Nor does that limit some swingers from forming multi-faceted, loving relationships with long-time swinging friends-whether they chose to acknowledge the depth of the relationships or not.

For some polyamory purists, these cross-over behaviors seem to be troubling. Typically, music will accompany these happenings as there a certain awkwardness to performing sexual acts in front of strangers, let alone with other strangers with full involvement. The stay rate for swinging often is low, usually less than 20% for more than a month at a time, due to the feelings of guilt and immorality that come with bouts of interatrial sex.

Although married women reported lower levels of marital sexual frequency than men did, about one third of the women reported that they would like to have sex at least daily, while another third reported wanting to engage in sex two to five times a week. However the occurrence of swinging itself has risen over the past decade, most likely due to the glamorization of the acts in modern pornographic imagery via adult films. Despite the evidence that Americans engage in extra-marital liaisons, there is still a widespread disapproval of extra-marital sexual relationships, which tend to be viewed as a threat to the marital relationship.

Orgy

The term orgy as defined from a sexual standpoint in modern day culture typically means a minimum of five to six people participating inter-communally in sexual activity. In most scenarios partners will stay away from each other if applicable, and migrate to other people they are not romantically affiliated with. The reasoning for exploring these happenings are typically similar to those in swinging in that many couples and single individuals alike are searching more excitement in their love lives and want to search externally for fulfillment.

he main differentiating factor between an orgy and swinging is that in swinging 100% of the participants are in a committed relationship whereas an orgy can be made of up single or committed relationships. This usually contributes to the variety of personality sets in orgies and makes for a more eventful and exciting interaction, according to popular opinion of those who have participated in orgies as well as swinging with their partners alone. Orgies tend to increase the length of the sexual act themselves by a significant amount and thus have an unexaggerated effect in pornographic films, since in reality these acts could potentially last hours on end.

According to recent research, orgies have become significantly more prevalent, as the moral compass of the global society loosens and morals stressed by parental units tend to fade with time, more so today than in the past. What remains to be seen is whether or not the prevalence of orgies in the world will be affected by the tightening of legislation regarding pornography entertainment using teenagers and committed partners that eventually suffer lawsuits after production.

Bukkake

Easily the most controversial and talked about form of group sex in today’s culture is the sexual act of bukkake. Bukkake is the act in which multiple men at one-time climax and ejaculate on a single woman or man. This often is prevalent in the Japanese culture, where it originated in the late 1980s. The actual event itself has evolved quite a bit from the original interpretation. Originally it was only one dumping the load of semen on the female role’s facial area, however in most of today’s interpretations of Bukkake, the female is shot with multiple streams from multiple men at the same time in order to create a much more dramatic effect that will entertain a greater audience that demands more shock factor.

Since then, Bukkake has, to many people’s surprise, spread across the world in a viral fashion and can be found in an increasingly high amount of pornographic films. Today the act is being popularized by the gay community, in which multiple men will stand above another man and ejaculate over a single man remaining still at the ready. While the originating idea of where Bukkake initially sprung out of is unknown, many people speculate that the Japanese cultural focus on facial beauty is to blame for starting to have the feminine characters being focused on while being ejaculated on from above. This allows the facial beauty of the feminine actor to be emphasized despite being humiliated, symbolizing that the beauty will shine through. Up until the mid 2000s, Bukkake seemed to be somewhat of a taboo and did not have much of a backing the porn entertainment industry.

This trend finally gained traction when several European porn filming agencies began implementing the act of Bukkake into their films, and popularity then spread across the continent rapidly. While many men seem to appeal to Bukkake’s emotional and visceral sense of dominance over the feminine character, feminists and women across nations have banded together to oppose the idea of using the act in pornographic films.

For this reason, the popularity has been halted in the United States, as many Americans according to opinionated research, do not believe in the degradation and objectification of women. While many pornographic filming agencies in the United States have begun to use Bukkake in their films, it has not gained the mass appeal that the European and Asian porn markets have experienced on a widespread national level. However, as technology and public opinion evolves by the day, many pornographic historians speculate that Bukkake will finally gain traction among the American public with time, with the rationale being that eventually the morals and status quo of the American culture will be so degraded that anything will go, and Bukkake will have its place as it did in the rest of the world.

Group Sex

Under the general umbrella, group sex over the past 100 years has become extremely popular among couples and uncommitted partners relative to its origins. Many speculate the sheer amount of popularity that has come about to group sex is due in part to the massive proliferation of pornography that coincides with technological advancements, particularly the internet and pornographic films. Another theory is that the act of watching others have sexual intercourse stimulates the brain and floods dopamine to the nervous system, causing an affectual relationship with the act of partaking in sex with several other people.

Until the 21st century, group sex was typically held in secluded environments and in private settings. However recently, there has been an increase in the amount of intentional gatherings to partake in the act of group sex. Specifically, these gatherings are often advertised through online portals such as Craiglist, Tinder, and even forum message boards. With regards to online interaction, in some cases these group sex gatherings even occur over instant messaging while utilizing a webcam.

There has also been a substantial increase in the number of sex clubs and societies in which large amounts upwards of 100-150 people meet up to have sexual intercourse in a large communal setting. These clubs typically do not have any sort of membership rules and usually allow anyone over the age of 18 to enter and partake in the acts. This has brought up causes for concern regarding sanitary and hygiene issues as well as disease transmission worries. Since the 2000s, multiple instances of large gathers called “rainbow parties” in which women put on various colors of lipstick and give males oral fellatio in certain sequences that leave males with an entire rainbow on their penises, much to the females’ chagrin.

The uprising of this happening has caused several bouts of outrage among parents, medical communities, and moral figures in the global society. However, many believe that the evidence available is not strong enough to account for these parties actually happening in history. Regardless of the method, group sex has become a global phenomenon and should continue to see an increase in usage as it is popularized and glamorized by the pornographic culture that seemingly dominates the daily visit schedule of young adults and teens.

Circle Jerk

A Circle Jerk, is a sexual act performed by multiple men at the same time in one location, in which men masturbate in a communal setting, and occasionally help each other achieve climax by performing hand jobs on each other, when certain members are mutually homosexual. Circle jerks are called this name primarily because the act is typically performed in a circle sitting down so that visibility can be maximized and the act of jerking off is synonymous with masturbating. While this certainly is the way that these acts began, today there are multiple variations of how the shape is dictated. If a large group is present for example, the group may decide to break up into smaller circles that masturbate within their own circle with no interaction with the other groups. The majority of these clubs are free to join or charge a small monthly facilities fee.

The act is extremely uncommon in United States, primarily due to the lack of place in American culture and acceptance for homosexuality, however in Asian and European areas, circle jerking sometimes is a recurring experience for certain groups of friends and colleagues. Typically, pornographic material is viewed either on a television set or female prostitutes are present to assist in the visual stimulation and climax achievement. That being said, some instances of circle jerking are not accompanied by any music or video whatsoever, typically more prevalent in the gay communities, given that the arousal is communal among the men seeing their sex of preference within an arm’s length.

Many anti-progressive political and moral figures believe that circle jerking poses a threat to the psychological development and safety of young boys age 12-16 as their minds are typically more malleable and can easily be influenced by culture that lives in an opportunistic and rebellious fashion. There have been several forum communities that have sprung up in opposition to the sexual act and several education initiatives have been put in local schools to prevent this drastic of experimentation at such an early age.

Statistically, it is difficult to gauge the efforts being recognized through a reduction in circle jerking due to privacy violation.  That being said, the concern of mental health of children that experiment with unconventional sex acts early in life is being brought up across the globe. Several instances of circle jerking have made public news mainly due to the acts being accidently publicized and caught on camera and being pushed as a scandalous event among viewers.

Foursome Group Sex

An interesting variation on the idea of group sex is the classic (in terms of the pornographic industry) “foursome” in which two men and two women (typically) partake in sexual activity, including oral and full blown sexual intercourse. This pornographic phenomenon came about when it was initially brought to popular viewership by adult films featuring two of the most sought after porn stars and vice versa with the males.

As this brought the viewers all together, out of this collaboration, the foursome was popularized and became a mainstay in the porn industry. As an aftereffect, many couples and uncommitted partners have a desire to partake in foursomes, much their partner’s similar desire as well. A popular example of foursome is a wife swap in which two couples switch their respective partners, effectively pairing all four individuals with an unfamiliar partner for sexual purposes.

This surprisingly happens more in married couples than it does in unmarried couples. Some speculate the fact that married couples are almost split downline when looking at the current divorce rate of almost half of all couples. Many people are losing faith in their relationships and thus are looking for external sources of pleasure. The appeal in keeping the number strictly at four is that each pair of two will receive a more intimate experience than perhaps a full blown orgy in which each partner only interacts with another for a fraction of the entirety of the encounter.

Foursomes are also used in an alternative way called “soft swapping” in which a couple that is committed will watch (but not interact) another committed couple partake in sexual conduct and use it as either a form of entertainment potentially for masturbation purposes or even as motivation to engage themselves within the same encounter in sexual intercourse.

Marital Effects

For years, the scientific community has raised the question of whether or not the art of group sex has any psychological or relational effects on marriages and partnerships in the long term. Of course many would argue that the majority of people who participate in group sex receive massive amounts of short term pleasure, however less is known about whether or not long term fulfillment and happiness achieved from having recurring group sex. From a research standpoint, studies show that switching up the specific partner that one person is currently with increases levels of companionship and fulfillment by up to 34% however decreases a feeling of innocence and moral value by 64%. What remains to be seen is effect it has on the divorce and abortion rates across the globe.
