Although the campaigns are being run at this age of development and innovation to ban the development of the sex robots, it is completely wrong to ban it outright without even seeing its effects on the society. According to the people running these campaigns, the development of the sex robots should be banned because it reinforces or reproduces the existing problems of the society like inequality. But to ban the development outright seems short sighted and undesirable without seeing its potential benefits.

sexwithrobotsThe Existing Research

The existing research into the sex robots generally centers on the superficial exploration of the attachment of the human beings which have been popularized by the movies like Her and Ex Machina, through a male dominated approach of the sex machines often without the considering the concept of the gender parity. It can be said that the sex work is a model which can be mirrored in human robot relations.

Need for a New Narrative

A new narrative should be created to discuss the subject of the sex through or with machines since the sex in robotics is currently a narrative which should be challenged. A discussion about the ethics of gender and sex in robotics is long overdue.

Looking Out For the Future

Not coming into open about the sex and sexual identities has been a great source of mental and social troubles and anguish for a lot of people which often can extend to the entire societies for many centuries. The politics behind this lack of openness is very damaging. But as we should avoid the imports of the existing sexual gender and sexual biases into the technology of the future, we should also be very aware of not importing the existing prudishness.

Machines Are What We Make Them to Be

The machines are what we make them to be. The robotics allow us to explore the problems without the restrictions of being human. A machine is like a blank slate which offers us a chance to reframe our ideas. Through the internet, a world has already opened up where the people can explore their sexual preferences, desires, sexual identities, and sexual politics and build communities of those who share their views. The society is rethinking the dualism of the sex and gender. So why should we keep the sex robots binary?

Bottom Line

To campaign against the development of the sex robots is shortsighted. The society should use this topic as a base from which they could explore new ideas of inclusivity, legality and social change instead of banning this idea is about time for new approaches to artificial sexuality which includes a step away from the idea of machines-as-sex-machines along with all of its associated biases. Since the machines are what we make them to be, it is in our total control to shape the AI according to our wishes and whims instead of banning it. The fear of a branch of AI losing control gives the rise to the campaigns of stopping the killer robots but to stop the development of the sex robots as well? Make love, not war.

The Ethics of the Robot Love

A conference, called the Love and Sex with the Robots, was to be held in Malaysia last week which was cancelled because of the Malaysian police which branded it with the names of the “illegal” and “ridiculous”. According to a Malaysian police chief, there is nothing scientific at all about the sex with the robots.

However, many people think that there are many different and interesting aspects of intimate robot partners which are worth the research and the discussions. Like concepts rose in the science fiction movies like Ex Machina, the robots inevitably turn on humans as it is the way of the fiction.  Putting aside the AI of the movies like Transcendence, Robocop or Oblivion, the question arises about the moral issues about the sexual relations with a robot. According to some people, there is a moral issue with the intimacy with the robots. The proof of these people existing is the campaigns like “For sex robots to be banned”.

The Argument of “For Sex Robots to be banned”

The argument of this organization, which has launched this campaign, is that the sex with the robots will promote the gender inequality which is linked with the other similar arguments made against the prostitution and pornography. But with this argument that anything which promotes or reinforces the gender inequality should be outright banned, one would be committed to ban the Iliad and many other plays of the Shakespeare or the novels of Austen. If the reinforcement of the gender inequality is the problem, one could develop the sexual robots without any problems which do not promote or reinforce the gender inequality either in behavior or in form.

Consequences of Robots in Out Beds

A more important concern about the sex robots might be the consequences of the act of bedding the robots instead of the fellow human being of the opposite sex. Many questions arise that what would be the trajectory of the human race if it really happened and where the humanity would end up if such devices were to invade the sex lives of the people.

These questions could be answered with the fact that, even with invention of the sex toys such as dildos and vibrators, the people have not stopped getting married or having babies. The answer to the robots in our beds could lie along these lines.

Supporters of Development of Sex Robots

The arguments supporting the development of the sex robots are that the robot prostitutes are a lesser evil than the human prostitutes and they will reduce the traffic of the human beings into degraded sex work. If the world must have prostitutes, then the robot prostitutes seem like a much safer, better and preferable option than a human prostitute. But perhaps the biggest moral issue is the question that does the sex with a robot count as adultery? Its answer could along the lines of another question which is, does an orgasm with a sex toy count as adultery? A sex robot of today is little more than a programmed machine but who know what the future holds.

Unidirectional bonding

No matter how you see it, there is no persuasive case of banning the development of sex robots and sex toys. However, there is a case of health warnings to make sure that people know about the unidirectional emotional bonding. The robots of today are able to engage in sexual activity today but it could take decades or even centuries for them to be able to return your love.

Science’s Opinion about the Amount of Sex per Week

For a person to happy, the amount of sex a person needs in a week is a ridiculous question that has rampaged through the heads of many people. While the most people answer this question with a fairly high number, the opinion of science says otherwise. According to science, you need to have sex only once a week to stay happy and content. This was revealed in a study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.

Amy Muise and Her Research

A lead author and a sex and romance scientist working for the University of Toronto Mississauga, Amy Muise, performed a study, divided in three parts, on a group of people in order to discover the link between the sex and the happiness which is not as simple as some people think it may be. There are various studies and opinions out there that link the frequency of your sex every week with you overall happiness. The study of the Amy Muise has dismissed this concept to a certain degree.

The First Part of Muise’s Research

For the first part of the Muise’s study, the data from a study, established for 23 long years covering over 25,000 people, was used in which the sexual desires, patterns and preferences of these were looked at. The results from this part of her research showed that the more sex is indeed linked with the higher happiness but only until the frequency of the sex reaches once in a week. Over this limit of once per week, the relation between the sex and happiness becomes more tenuous and the effect that sex has on happiness becomes less significant.

Second Part of Research

The second part of her research involved asking 335 participants to take an online survey. These participants were asked the same questions about the sex and happiness in a relationship and the results from this study confirmed the previous findings. This time, Amy compared the sex-happiness link with another oft-cited source of happiness known as personal wealth. Those people $25000 a year were less happy than those earning $75,000 a year. But the involvement of the sex gave a huge rise of their happiness than large sums of money.

Third Part of Research

For the third part of her study, Amy Muise used the data from a 14 year-long study of 2,400 married couples and the results she discovered were that more sex linked to higher satisfaction in relationships but this link became insignificant when sex occurred more than once a week.

The Muise gave her statement regarding her research to the Huffington Post in which she said that her research suggested that engagement in regular sex was associated with the happiness but it is not necessary for a couple to aim for sexual engagement as frequently as possible since it is important to have realistic expectations for one’s sex life because many couples are busy with their work responsibilities.

Effects of Unenthusiastic Sex on Happiness

According to the results from various studies including the Amy Muise’s study about the effects of sex on one’s overall happiness, those who have more sex are more likely to be happy. So logically speaking, more sex you have, happier you will be but a controlled trial says otherwise.

It is rather easy to fall for the logic of more sex more happiness and some extensive and long studies have shown that all you need to stay happy is more sex. But that is not necessarily the case since the causation can go both ways like people who are happier have more sex or other things like being in love or good health makes up happier and we indulge in more sexual activity.

The Study for the Sake of Science

Clearly, a scientific study was needed to resolve this issue and the researchers at, Carnegie Mellon University did just that by persuading some volunteers to stake their bodies for sake of science. They recruited 64 married couples between the ages of 35 to 65 and asked them a randomly assigned group to double the amount of sex they have been having for 3 months. The control group was to do as they pleased. For entire duration of the experiment, the couples were asked about their sexual experiences along with daily online surveys regarding health and happiness. A survey of the overall happiness of the participants was also conducted at start and the end.

The results were as expected. The couples who were asked to double their sexual activity were less happy than those who were asked to carry on as they have been. These results were reported in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.

The Problem Discovered

The problem, which was somewhat obvious, was that the sex is not that much fun without a desire for it. Those who were asked to double their sexual activity were able to enjoy sex less because of less desire for it and sex, which was a source of pleasure, became a chore for them. The lead author professor George Loewenstein said that possible reason for this lack of desire was due to consciousness of their sexual activity part of research than their voluntary engagement. He plans on using other methods for his next study like hotel rooms or Egyptian Sheets to put the participants into sexy mind frames than directing them to do.

Another reason for decreased sexual desire in middle aged couples is the overwork, lack of sleep and anxiety about the money. May be the future studies could look into these factors.
